This is a discussion on "any battlefield MUDs?" in the Top Mud Sites Advanced MUD Concepts forum : Are there any MUDs that are full or limited PK witha "battlefield theme?" In other words could historical battles like Culloden be made into MUDs? Why would someone bother to do this when there are graphical MUDs? Well, perhaps a text game can get greater depth like "why" the soldiers are duking it out with one another in the first place. The obvious problematic element of this concept is that of playerbase size. But if you allowed "nominal mobs" or players to control mobs like "regiments" that wouldn't be a problem. ... |

Considering how obvious teh idea of a battlefielf MUD is I am surprised that one is ahrd to find. I don't see that the coding involved would be much more demanding than in any MUDs. Anyway, two groups of players duking it out with cannonballs and swords, or laser beams and photon blasters etc: justa thought. |

There are a few problems with large scale Battles in Muds that generally cause people to keep things small. The normal auto-combat gets impossible to follow when you get more than a few people involved for one. Even the basic Room display can be a problem with larger groups.
I am working on a SF project that will incorporate large scale battles, but to do it I am giving everything coordinates and doing a lot of work to support that. So even though there may be 100 people in a 'room' each player will only see those nearby. A.T (-) |
