This is a discussion on "Adventure on your iPod?" in the Top Mud Sites Advanced MUD Concepts forum : After all the posts we keep seeing about whether MUDs and text-based gaming in general is doomed in the face of graphical MMORPGs, I thought this article was pretty interesting: http://www.wired.com/news/games/0,21...tml?tw=rss.TOP... |

Now I'll just have to wait for them to release text-based games on CD players, then I might be able to afford to play them! But this is interesting, most people say text-based games are dying, but I think there's always going to be people who like to play text-based games.

I am always hoping someone will come up with a really good, easy to use, free telnet client for PDA/phone use.
I don't think you'd be able to do any serious, intense mudding, but you could at least chat a bit, catch up on mail, etc. This would be a real selling point to text based games imho. |

Now look, you can pick up a decent cd player for under $50. So be of good cheer, young padawan, all good things to those who wait. Honestly, Considering Muds and other text-based ORPGs ARE such a niche market (Thriving though they may be.) I hardly think that a telnet client for mobile/PDA (At least one which allows you to connect to any server, not just your service provider's sponsers.) is high enough on the development list that it's going to be released before the hardware's mainstream. It's probably not that far off though, 2g networks, (At least where I'm from), are rapidly declining in popularity as the new 3g networks gain more coverage. Even the primary telco in my country is trialing a transfer to 3g. |

I never thought of getting a game on my cell phone because it costed money to play such low-quality games...but one of those new cellphone/pda things with full-fledged keyboards might make for an interesting game/MUD...

I once programmed a MUD-like RPG into my graphic calculator (back in the '90s when calculators had much less memory capability than they have now). Given the advances in calculators, to say nothing of PDAs, it shouldn't be that hard provided someone has the time and desire to try.
I'd probably find it cool, but I'm like a kid around such things. *grin* Take care, Jason |
