This is a discussion on "looking for a mud" in the Top Mud Sites Advertising for Players forum : Summer Break is almost here, which means I may finally have a reliable schedule in which to play a mud. So now I'm looking for one. I was getting all excited about this Dragon's Gate mud. I like the roleplay atmosphere created by their website; I'm intrigued by the idea of learning magic by trying out combinations of keywords (runes, whatever); I absolutely love the fact that they claim a person can advanced by practicing their skills alone, not by hunting for exp points. Unfortunately, I simply can't afford pay-to-play right now, so I'... |

Summer Break is almost here, which means I may finally have a reliable schedule in which to play a mud.
Unfortunately, I simply can't afford pay-to-play right now, so I'm looking for a free alternative. REQUIRED: Roleplay orientation (sincere, but not too strict and "realistic" as far as code goes) Combination-based magic (or at the very least something significantly different from the usual magic system) BIG BONUSES: No need to hunt to gain levels/stats PK not required Original spells and skills, especially utility spells and skills, and even more so spells and skills not designed for fighting/grouping at all. Original religions/alignments and guilds/clans. I get a bit sick of Good/Evil/Balance/Order/Chaos/Nature/Magic. I know, you use it because it works; but it would be nice to see something new. SMALLER BONUSES: Smallish dragons (not dragonish humanoids) as a race adept in magic Detailed character creation For all the regulars who (to paraphrase) don't have quite what I want but have a really great mud that I might like to try out anyway: go sit down! I assure you I've seen your advertisement countless times. |

The Inquisition, it has what you seem to be looking for: MAGIC - a very involved, event handled magic system. Spells are unique, and very well thought out. I will not, for reasons of spoiling, go into more. Suffice to say that, when magic is used within the game, it is talked about for quite some time. COMBAT - again, event handled. Using our combat-emote system, you describe what you are doing, rather than a simple 'kill goat' command. Our code parses your sentence and figures the actions based on keywords, then determines the success of that attack. ROLEPLAY - it's not just a saying, its required. You don't gain experience from killing things. Rather, you gain it by interacting with others (RPXP). You can gain thru exploration as well, but RPXP is the main experience gaining system. HELPS - there are over 1000 helpfiles, all handled by a detailed engine. You can search through them, index them, or call up random helpfiles. Helps are maintained regularly, and have a 'last updated' field to assure you that 100% effort has gone into them. The Inquisition |

I was curious as to who the regulars were...!
Go and look at Azhad. The magic structure is diverse and original, built around Azhad's UNIQUE theme. Yep, unique, I've never seen nor heard of anything like it. Outremer!! Based on the "Musketeer" genre and set in an ORIGINAL theme. Many of the systems are unique to Outremer as fas as I know! I've never heard nor seen their combat or magic system anywhere else in MU*dom! Quote me on it! Sav |

Take a look at the Southlands, it's a roleplaying oriented game with combination magic(k). Well, there is so much to say about Southlands so I suggest you take a look yourself.
I hope you enjoy and like what you see. Tindalos |

For about a summer's worth of playing a mud regularly I don't think 30 dollars is all that bad. 10 bucks a month? And I remember getting in trouble for the two/three times I somehow cut my DGate time down to 200 dollars a month, which was only about 100hrs of play time. But now it's only 10 dollars a month. Ah well, many people can't even spare that. I somehow sneak it in by not drinking one night a month when I go out. Helps me justify it!
As for other choices, you could always do what I do and just play a game for a day or two, feel it out and then move on, and then pick your favourite. That's what I did when DGate was down for a month or two before the move. Good luck! I hope you find what you want! (You wanted to play a Drag-al mage on DGate by the way didn't ya Eliot |

Do any of you three that have advertised for the Southlands have any reason, based on what he asked for in a mud, for him trying your mud? Or are you just in a 'me too' mood today? It'd be nice if one of you did what the other posters have done thus far, and listed off how your mud fits his requirements.
