Here is my attempt on how the look-and-feel of a mud could be turned into a single-player game. Apologies in advance to Netscape and Opera users: perhaps some brave soul will adapt it to make it work with your browser, for now you'll need to use a copy of IE

Just a couple of quick legal points, which is slightly off-topic, but perhaps of interest to other developers of custom codebases. When connecting to your game, you state:
Jewel of Jeopardy, and JavascriptMUD ( c ) 2002 Mike Beaudry Written and placed into public domain by Mike Beaudry. You may freely copy this program and modify it to your heart's content, provided you distribute it with this copyright notice intact. Firstly, "( c )" has no legal meaning. Secondly. placing something into the public domain means you give up your copyright - in other words, people can do whatever they like with your code. You cannot place restrictions on them if you do this. |

Hey, that's pretty neat =).
I'm playing right now and having quite a bit of mindless fun. Thanks for sharing this, Jornel! |

Thanks, Threshold, I really appreciate the feedback.
KaVir, I bow to your legal knowledge and have tweaked the notice to better reflect my intentions -- "Dammit Jim, I'm a coder, not a lawyer!" |

I am proud to say I have been victorious in slaughtering the foul Goblin boss!
Thanks again Jolen, that was quite a bit of fun. |

Heh. Good fun. Minor niggles though:
1) A time delay between each battle round would be helpful- by the looks of it, a really long fight would scroll your screen all the way down, preventing you from viewing its progress. 2) After the death of a mob, the prompt could be echoed, meaning people can view their hitpoints after a fight. Otherwise, nice work. |

Lots of fun, though I'd add some sort of message once you beat the Goblinissimo to tell you that you're done. I kept looking for the next part, or for the western gate to open, or for the Guildmaster to say something to me. But I loved it.
Oh, and you need to give the battleaxe some word-stats. It keeps saying that it was undefined. Good job, man. |

I'm glad you are all having good fun with it.
Here are answers to some of the things brought up: Santrilla: the 'time delay' thing. Okay, basically I had to fudge that a bit since the only input to the game is when you press return. At that point, the game checks time and decides whether or not another round has happened --- not quite real time, but close enough. (There is no risk of scroll beyond 3 rounds, I made that a hard limit). Re prompt after combat? Again, after pressing return so many times during combat, I see no shortage of prompts. I guess we must have different keyboard styles Wik (and others): Beating Goblissimo isn't quite 'the end', it is 'almost the end'. You should pick up 'the head of Goblissimo' and then you need to figure out what to do with it, which will lead you to the 'proper' end of the game --- I won't say anything more for those who want to reach the 'true' end, but I will confirm to you that beating Goblissimo is the final combat of the game. Well done, all of you who have played and are posting good feedback. Should I be thinking about writing a sequel soon... ? |

A New Beginning?
Congratulations, you have successfully passed Jewel of Jeopardy. I hope you liked it. If this has given you an appetite for playing on a real MUD, then my goal in writing it has been fulfilled. See you on Crimson Marches... telnet://crimson.wolfpaw.net:7777 I WON I WON!! |

I like it, but what is the goal exactly? Once you kill the big goblin dude, is there more to do?
