One of BIYG's most prominent features is the 'shard system'.

In ages past, a legendary jewel known as the 'Shikon no Tama' was the source of conflict in the feudal era. It is said that the jewel grants the holders deepest desire and is a source of great power. Countless battles were fought over it and countless beings died in an attempt to gain its legendary power. Eventually two powerful groups rose to the top and a final battle began to decide who would claim the jewel. The battle ended not with a winner, but the result of the jewel being shattered by the clash of the two groups. The jewel shattered into countless shards and scattered across the world.

These shards of the jewel are now being sought in order to restore the jewel and grant one of their deepest desire. The power of the jewel remains within the shards, and those shards can be used to gain beneficial powers. Strength, speed, intelligence to name a few. The shards can be embedded within ones body, or attached to weapons and armor. Mobs are involved as well, often finding shards and using them to gain power. Killing a mob that was using a shard results in attaining that shard and becoming one step closer to completing the full jewel. The shards were not scattered among one world, but two; the feudal and modern era.
