So, as of tonight, we're releasing our alchemist class. The design for this class is in large part five years old, with modifications based on changes to Avendar in the interim and a modest helping of the salt of experience and the madness of age. Like the alchemical texts of the middle ages, I had copied my notes from one hard drive to another, preserving the flickering flame of their contents from one frail vessel to another, convinced that each library that it found its home in might be the last, until finally my design notes found harbor in Gmail, where they were preserved in the mind of some sort of proto technological God until I could convince the right people that we should implement them.

My inspiration for alchemy arose from my background in physics and mathematics, both of which are disciplines which at times strive to codify the world in terms of a universal grammar. No, I didn't really design a formal mathematical system for alchemy, but I was driven by a desire for a system of magic that matched the physics of our own world.

What's the crux of this idea?

Imagine that the world of Aristotelian physics worked, and you could use it to produce magic. Imagine if the medieval alchemists were right, and you really could derive all there is to know of the world by mixing together certain elements.

That's alchemy, and we hope you enjoy it.</span>
I would add that this was worth waiting five years for. With 830+ skills/spells in Avendar for alchemic works to draw from, alchemists for years to come will be discovering, creating and collecting recipes, as well as ferreting out and inferring the complex lore of elemental and platonic biases that underlies the system. In the words of the class coder, Raestral, "There are easter eggs buried a mile deep in this class."

Check out the details on the class here: http://avendar.com/alchemist.php
