While I realize you have already found a mud that meets your criteria, I wanted you and others to know that NWA does have familiars that can be controlled. They are in the form of guard dogs you can purchase in various locations, guards, elementals, etc. Be warned though that many familiars are particular to a specific guild.

However, we have just added some unique pets that are found in some cities in the game that can be customized and do have life spans.

New Worlds familiars are great! PLUS the new pets are awesome I love them!! Oh good to know they have a life span, I'll need to rp them more!!

You may be interested in the Empathic Bonds system (vaguely inspired by the daemons from His Dark Materials) on Lost Souls. Several different guilds are based around it, with different approaches to the concept, and overall it's some of our best and most technically advanced content.
