The avatar thingy WILL go down one of these days for a bit. Both the upload thingy as well as the avatars themselves. Don't worry much about it, the avatars will NOT get erased or deleted, I'm merely upgrading my server from Apache 1.3 with PHP 4.1.2 to Apache 2.0 with PHP 4.2.1.

Well, since this was already a post about the avatars, I thought I would make a comment here.

Regarding the avatars, or the pictures under the "login names" to the left of the posts - in general :

Any reason why these were added in? I can see the benefit, I mean, you get to have a small image to help "identify" your character to the rest of the forum.

But I can also see the detriments. Every time a page loads, your browser and ISP has to load in some 20+ extra images?

On top of that, the images aren't cropped in SIZE - by that I mean IMAGE size in KB. They are cropped in width / length, yes.

But can't there be some kind parameter, similar to using an AOL Instant Messenger Buddy Icon, where the image has to be less than, say 7000 bytes or something? More than HALF of the images that I click on, and view the REAL image are HUGE files that are something like 400x500 pixels wide, and may be 100s of kilobytes in size.

Just thinking from someone who is using a 56k dial up modem (which, thankfully, I am not) - but it would really hinder them loading pages, no?

I did search for anything on this topic, and didn't find anyting, so please forgive me if I posted here incorrectly.

I recall an option somewhere in the user prefs to leave out avatars, or sigs, and stuff like that.

20+ extra images is not possible, considering there are 10 posts on a page. That, along with multiple posts by the same person make that even less, since your browser needs only to download the pic once and can fill in the rest of the spots.

If the world is good-hearted like me, they'll pick small pics to begin with, but even then, and I'm no expert, doesn't a small width\length = less KB?

You got us there, but as I said, less length\width will be less size. We can't all get it perfect, but in 64x64 pixels, there isn't a lot of KB you can cram into there. If you don't want to be looking at 100k 400x500 pictures, then don't do it.

Well, yeah, guess it would...but Ikonboard is apparently version 3.0.2a, I'm sure they've had time to iron out kinks and help correct that from user feedback or whatever.

hmm,first - I think you can disable avatars,just like signatures.

now,about that facility..I think it might be not working, because of recent events on the flame front (ie. Seth's ban, if I remember everything correctly)
so,hmm..there's how you can get yourself an avatar,if this one isnt working :
1.go to geocities,tripod etc.
2.register yourself a free web-site.
3.upload here an image,it will be something like www.geocities.com/<username>/<image.jpg> I suppose
4.now set this adress as your avatar.

well,there's other,maybe even easier way,I suppose :
1.Find Seth.
2.Kick and punch him 'till he'll get avatar facility working again

or,even one more way :
1.create a new website dedicated to this junk
2.place your avatar here
