The new design needs some softening, I agree, but a change would be a good idea, in my opinion. I like change in websites, as things can get old if you see them a lot.

It's a shame that the hard drive failed, cos it means we lost a lot of threads n stuff. All those continuing stories lost...

Still, it's a good lesson in backing up. Remember kids, if you don't back up your files, you could end up knee-deep in dragon dung. Get a zip drive!

Anyway, good luck to the admin. I have total faith that you'll get the fora up and running again.

He did back it up, just that it is an old copy as he didn't backup over holidays, and the backup got partially corrupted.

Lesson: make backups of backups

I'm still in the process of setting back up the site. I'm trying to find the news tiker hack I had before that allowed recent posts to be shown on the front page. Also, this isn't necessarily the new forum skin look - it's just one I found that looked better than the plain other one.

A few things I want to point out and/or mention, just in case they've been missed.

First, Welcome to Four Dimensions is listed as a resource site, when it wasn't before (so it seems that the database of listings might be partially corrupted).

Also, the resources listing (and I would guess the others as well) is listing their total rank, and not their rank within that section.

Finally, can we please get the 'previous ranking' information that was included with the temporary site added to the rankings? IE previous ranking overall and previous ranking in your section... that information would be somewhat useful. A generated page of rankings would be good as well, so that we could see total rankings, rankings by category, etc.

Just a thought.

4) The majority of forum threads seem to be missing.  I know that other people have commented on this. but it still deserves mentioning.  Perhaps the files are NOT really missing?  Perhaps the new forum just requires some additonal info (like pointers or indices to messages not created by it).  Although it may be just easier to forget about the old threads, since people will just post new ones about topics they are interested.

Unfortunately, they're gone. They are missing because the last backup I have of the forum data is from mid-November. Figures, the one time I slack off on backups this happens. Lesson learned, I guess.

I'll look into adding previous rankings after I get everything fixed back to normal, although that's more of a space issue (where to put it?). This script isn't capable of generating a separate page of rankings for previous ranking, overall category rankings, etc.
