I put together a promotional video recently that we're going to stick on our webpage to act as both a teaser for someone who hasn't played Achaea before, and as a way to help prepare someone new to MUDs for what they're about to encounter on firing up a MUD. (Apologies for the superlatives in it, but it is a promo video after all!)

Enjoy!

Welcome to Achaea - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZK95rpqP4M)

If you like hack and slash muds or collecting hordes of equipment then necromium is the mud for you. It isn't just your average mud. When you log in look for Jherico or fhavanias and I could give you some help leveling and equipping and what not. Theres a multi class system which is maxed out at avatar allowing you to play all four classes and then finally suping up your base class as an avatar. All types of players are welcome. It's a pretty hard core circle mud pk system also.

Empiremud 2.0a

Greetings TMS! I'm Deus from Empiremud 2.0 and I am here to give you some awesome news about Empiremud! Paul Clarke has decided to dust off the old server and begin developing it again and we are going in a completely different direction this time around. Here is a web address to the word press and change log for the mud: EmpireMUD | telnet empiremud.net 4000 (http://empiremud.net/)

I am pretty excited about all this I haven't seen an empiremud with this many new faces in a long time and I am hoping that we get even more over the coming months. Here is some of the more important changes that have been made in my opinion:

WoD(world of Darkness) skills and abilities have been trashed and replaced with a NEW skill tree

EXP is no longer required to progress in the game

Combat has had a complete overhaul with new values for life, move, and mana

Still has the same great ASCII character map with an added twist thanks to Paul's new skill tree

These are just some of the things that have changed with Paul having come back to continue development, so come join in on the fun with us as we grow in players and expand in development!

Dungeon of Elements - RPG Kickstarter

This morning, Frogdice launched our first ever Kickstarter for our new game, Dungeon of Elements (http://kck.st/14J1UWT).

Image: http://frogdice.com/doe/dungeon-sunken-temple-sm.jpg

Dungeon of Elements is an RPG dungeon crawler with combat inspired by some of our favorite classic puzzle games like Dr. Mario or Tetris. In Dungeon of Elements (DoE), core meets casual as we combine many different styles of gameplay in a fun, immersive experience. While trundling through dungeons, ruins, and 45 different environments, you will defeat over 60 enemy types, collect pets, craft items, weapons, and armor through alchemical experimentation, build your bestiary, and more.

For our project to be successful, we are going to need a lot of help. We're going to have to tap into every friend, family member, acquaintance, customer, everything. We are going to need everyone's help spreading the word far and wide so this project will succeed.

Visit the Dungeon of Elements Kickstarter Project

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/frogdice/dungeon-of-elements (http://kck.st/14J1UWT)

How we need people to help:

1) *Back the project!* Ultimately this is the most important thing. Kickstarter is all-or-nothing

2) Under the video on that page, click the *SHARE* on Facebook and *Tweet* links. That adds to an algorithm on Kickstarter that raises our chance to be featured on the front page.

3) *Spread the word!* Please tell absolutely everyone. You never know who might find the project interesting and want to back it. At a minimum, they can help share it too.

Kickstarter projects are exciting and fun because they require massive teamwork from hundreds or thousands of people.

Thank you for reading and I hope you'll enjoy helping us drive towards this goal!

The Reapers are dead. We’ve won the war. The galaxy is safe again.

This is what victory looks like.

Half of humanity is dead. Earth and Thessia lie in ruins, and Palaven isn’t much better. The Citadel is a heap of scrap metal barely maintaining orbit. The geth collapsed when the Reapers did, and the krogans are breeding out of control. Commander Shepard is dead.

We’ve lost so much.

On Omega, it doesn’t matter. You lose only what you aren’t strong enough to hold or rich enough to buy, and there are entire worlds for sale. It’s a land of opportunity, where no one looks too hard at where you came from or what you lost -- or what you’ve gained.

It’s the perfect place to start over.

On Omega, merchants traffic in weaponry and drugs, delicacies and slaves and everything in between. Dancers and musicians and actors make a name for themselves in front of the hardest-to-please crowds in the galaxy. Refugees huddle in the depths of Fumi District, desperate for any job that will give them the credits to climb higher. Quiet groups of researchers explore technology and medicine of questionable legal and ethical status. A cell of displaced quarians and allies seek to right a great wrong. Mercenaries vie for power in the space left by the collapse of two of the most notorious organizations to roam the galaxy.

And everyone is careful to never, ever **** with Aria.

Opportunity is waiting; Alpha Phoenix is hiring.

Are you ready to join?

Mass Effect: Alpha & Omega (http://me-alphaomega.com/wiki/Main_Page) is a MOO set in the Mass Effect universe after ME3 (with canon red destroy ending, tweaked a little (http://me-alphaomega.com/wiki/Canon)). It takes place on Omega, and while it takes advantage of the diversity of that setting, the primary story focuses around an up and coming mercenary group called Alpha Phoenix (http://me-alphaomega.com/wiki/Alpha_Phoenix).

Good Morning,

Please join me by playing 4 Liberty mud for the cause. The cause is
Freedom!

Because not only does it teach people about how paper money can
become worthless, and what happens with inflation. It also will be
used to show the importance of freedoms and why they are worth
fighting for. This is all done with a fantasy theme. This mud has a
configuration for the seeing impaired, making it accessible.

The game story can be viewed at 4 Liberty Story (http://jupe.no-ip.com/~patriot19/bin/story.html)

The list of current changes can be seen here. http:// jupe.no-ip.com/~patriot19/news.html

Thank you for your time.

Past or Present Tense?

With regards to roleplaying, I was wondering about preferences when it comes to players taking actions in the past or present tense, i.e:

Tom looked at Joe. He said, "hello Joe." (Past)
Tom looks at Joe. He says, "hello Joe." (Present)

I wonder if past tense was used it may create a sense of distance from your character, and more of a focus on creative writing. Things aren't happening to your character now, so it may not seem as personal when things happen to them. It may be easier to objectify them that way, treating your participation in the game more like you are telling a story.

However, I can see how that would also not be so desirable, because players also want to feel like they are their character too, and I think using the present tense works better for that.

Which do you prefer, and have you noticed any difference with how players play, in terms of how they react to bad things happening to their character, if past tense was used as opposed to the present?

Alter Aeon May 2013 Updates

As always we're continually adding new content and features to the game. If you haven't played Alter Aeon before, take a few minutes to come check us out - it's free to play, and new players are always welcome!

New areas added since the last update:

- The Forest of Brigands is a new high level area south and west of Cornia. As its name suggests, the forest is rife with bandits and monsters which sometimes prey upon travelers using the Eastern Trade Road. This area was created by Shadowfax.

- The Blue Mound is a new high level area north of Ralnoth. Giant insects have been found near it destroying the forest. This area was created by Draak.

- The Lotus Monastery is now open on the island of Archais. This is a level 24 area, and it contains a number of quests and deeds to complete for mid-high level players. This area was created by Morpheus.

Areas that have been updated:

- Ralnoth has been updated, adding quests and conversational strings to a most of the mobs. There are several strong quest lines between the city and the dwarven marketplace in Khal-Uktar to the southeast.

- The oriental city, Daigaku Tatami, has been updated similarly to Ralnoth and now also has a number of linkage quests. Both cities were updated by Draak.

- A number of old, high level areas have been releveled to take advantage of the new fame and group experience code, including places like the underwater ruins and Arcadia/Darcadia.

- The Labyrinth outside Jo'Kerin has been completely reworked. It's now harder, more confusing, has switches which change its layout, and is a big hit with higher level players.

As a final announcement, Kurek's excellent Mush-Z soundpack for the blind and visually impaired has been updated! Run the updater to check out the changes and make sure you're on the latest version. This version fixes a lot of outstanding bugs and should help make the experience a lot smoother. (If your updater doesn't connect, it might be too old. You may need to download a new one from the web site at: http://www.mush-z.com)

If you'd like to sign up for our mailing list, just send send an email to: alteraeon+subscribe@googlegroups.com

Thanks for playing!

If there are any visually impaired folks here I'd be interested to know about your experiences with MUDs. How is your client setup? What tools do you use for speech to text and text to speech? Do you use native OS support or third party utilities? What are your frustrations if any and how could things be improved? Etc. Thanks!

Hello! I've been a long-time player of Achaea, and I think its time for me to branch out a bit. I'm seeking a MUD with a good to large amount of players that also has a pretty extensive lore as well, as I'm interested in role-playing more seriously. Combat is not so important, but it can be included as well. Thanks, all! :)

One of our players produced a fantastically detailed map of the known parts of the world of Achaea, at high-resolution. I had it printed and framed on the wall of my office at almost four feet high, and some of the small towns are still almost too small to see. I love this thing!

ForgottenMUD GUI

I thought I'd post a screenshot of my progress. I recycled the mini buttons plugin and made an inventory. Next task is to add drag & drop, the WindowDragHandler function should handle it but I haven't tested it yet.

This deserves a separate thread.

I see a lot of progress here. Some feedback (in case you want any ;):

Regarding the new inventory elements:

* The first thing that strikes me is that the carried inventory is limited to 35 slots. Is that a game mechanic limit or a GUI display limit? Also, is there a benefit to not seeing potions as stacked together with a number in the corner? Is there an option to stack them? If so, it should probably be default.

* Assuming the items in the diamond-shaped block are worn, it would be nice to have a very faint silhouette of a person in the background to get the point across immediately.

* I think most people would want to have the inventory in its own panel. Consider adding it as a tab of the NPC/PC panel.

* It would be very neat if hovering on an item tells you some of its most important stats as well.

* It would also be neat if the inventory is coupled with a way to see your stats. That way people can try on different items and see how their character's stats change.

Some general suggestions:

* An option to turn off room descriptions that will turn them into tooltips when one hovers on the room pic.

* Less busy, fainter, higher-res background. Maybe something like this (http://th03.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/i/2013/081/5/c/dark_widow_texture_by_nunbul-d5yuvhq.png).

* Thinner frames, some of them rounded, if possible.

* Better and smaller game logo.

Legendary inactives

So a player finds <insert legendary/epic item>. This item is the only type of its kind(or perhaps even has other unique counterparts).
This item has its own myths and fables surrounding it, finding it is something that only a determined veteran can do.
To find and defeat the beast requires the sort of veteran who doesn't mind mindlessly farming one single mob over and over until they get the item. Then they find it! Thieves come after the player. But he holds them back
Rare collectors attempt to purchase the item. But he declines.

And then something happens to him...

He stops logging into the MUD. Suddenly the rare unique item is stuck on a pfile that doesn't play anymore.
I'm curious to know as to how admins( and players) think such a thing should be handled.

Nereids and Brine Elementals - Short RP Story

OOC: First time posting a story from a character log of mine. This is the first time I've felt so inspired to write more than a paragraph entry and thought I would like to share ....

Gifts of the Sea

Come the spring of 53, in the month of Rebirth, I had recently taken to boarding and capturing Coral Galleons. These ships, captained by alluring and deadly Nereids, are true vessels of the seas. Built of coral, covered with flotsam, and smelling of the deep oceans. The Nereids wield prized weapons; the large horns from long dead narwhales covered in delicate scrimshaw scrollwork from their prized artists and imbued with the power of Damhair. In the hands of his faithful, these horns will release lightning sometimes after piercing an opponent. As Damhair commands that the sea provides and this bounty, ship and scrimshaw horns, is but obviously a bounty provided unto me, his devout follower.

Sailing a yacht enticingly named Horn Bandit, I would sail out and wait for these galleons. Thereby I would take my kraken, bestowed as an effigy of my faith by Damhair himself, quickly board passing Coral Galleons, defeat the captain and take ship and horn for my pleasure. Having taken a score of this vessels before I have come to understand their shields and weapons.

Thus it came on Freeday, the 9th of Rebirth, I had outfitted my cruiser, the Derecho Ray, with similar shields and better weapons than a standard Coral Galleon and set sail to further explore the Southern Sea and increase my knowledge of the world. Having touched upon the Xandria desert at the end of the world and making way north on my sweep, I came upon a Coral Galleon, commencing henceforth a barrage upon her shields.

What I did not expect at this point was that the Nereid was a better sailor than I. Thus, while having smaller weapons, her and hers were better in the volley and I realized should I want to survive this day I would need to board and defeat the captain, as I had done numerous times before.

I boarded and commenced with battle, her spells against mine, and her making the better of it unlike most Nereid’s that go down quickly once I board. I had to rely on my ability to distract and confuse her in combat that she would no longer be able to cast spells at me. After a long battle she lay defeated and I another scrimshaw horn for my collection.

Alas, a second surprise lay in wait for me. On occasion I have seen these Nereid summon Brine Elementals to fight at their sides. What caught me in this battle was that during the exchange of ship fire I did not see the elementals creep aboard my ship and lay in wait for me to leave the deck. As if she expected me to leave my vessel and board hers, perhaps my reputation with the Nereid had proceeded me.

Such as this surprise lay in wait, it revealed itself when the nymph fell and I was looking over the corpse for my gains. Two Brine Elementals had seized control of my ship and begun a volley now against the Coral Galleon where I and my kraken stood not expecting this. This left me to contemplate pirating the Galleon to fire upon my Derecho Ray to end this battle or reclaiming my own ship and sinking the present prize.

Luckily for I, they only sought to reclaim their own ship and not pirate away with mine. I re-boarded the Derecho Ray and quickly dispatched of the intruders, proceeding to sink the Coral Galleon and claim victory this day.
