During a ceremony today commemorating the handover of Achaea from Sarapis the Logos (me) to Maya, the Great Mother (Achaea's new producer), Achaea broke 850 people online - a new record for Achaea.

Congratulations are in order for Minae Lee, the person behind Maya, who will be in charge of Achaea henceforth. She was the finest player of her time, and one of the best volunteers (maybe the best) Achaea's ever had and I have every confidence that as she begins her new life as a full-time Iron Realms producer, she will continue to excel in every area.

Jesus, 850, that's a whole lot of people.  I'm just curious, but what was the old record and when was it set? Was there some special event then?

If I remember correctly it was about 650 and was during the week when there were a bunch of celebrations going on because it was year 350 (in the game's reckoning of years).

I actually attended the ceremony as a player and thought it was really cool. Congrats to Makali-now-Maya, who I believe is one of the best leaders and administrators ever.

It was just under 700, though you have the date right.

Just want to share my congrats too! Leading Achaea is no small task, but I'm sure Minae's hardcore enough to handle it. Just shows: IRE is all about the games and its players! *whips out old "for gamers, by gamers" cliche*

I've known Maya since she was a player, having had a very close IC relationship with her at the time, and I can say it was a privilege to game with her and then later to see her soar as a volunteer admin. I cannot think of anyone more deserving as Maya to ascend to the role producer of Achaea.

Congratulations, Maya! You are one of the most responsible, hard working, fun and dedicated people I've come across and I only foresee great things for Achaea with you at the helm.

And bravo, Sarapis, for recognizing such a spectacular person!

Aardwolf had 853 simultaneous December 7th of last year, celebrating its eighth birthday, if I remember correctly.

Well Aardwolf record is 853 but I donnu if Acheas number of 850 is just rounded down. Our old record was also around 650 Newyeard eve 2 years agoe. I cannot remember when we got 853 but I think it was at Aardwolf Birthday in December

Cool to see you grow like this. Achea and Aardwolf does not compete about the player base since it different styles of playing. Achea being roleplaying and Aardwolf leveling, activety and chatting.

Achaea hit 854, but that's not any record for text MUDs generally. Gemstone used to get close to 2000 and both Gemstone and Dragonrealms still break 850 on a semi-regular basis.
