Has it seriously been a year since last Fidocon, or is it just bi-annually or set on some weird cycle?

We decided during the first one that we shouldn't wait a year to bring the community together again, so we're making it a bi-annual event. The one in the Fall will recognize MU*s in general. The one in the Spring will recognize individual achievements in roleplaying (read: Players who make these games great!, and we're running in tandem with Kyndig's coding competition. Winners of his contest will be announced at FidoCon II.

Hmm - do our references all have to be from the same MUD? Would a mixture of MUD references and free-form chat-based RP be acceptable? Do they need to be in-game RP instances, or could they be "RP Notes" in-game or short stories written about our characters?

It needs to be interactive RP. Doesn't all have to be from the same MUD. We're not looking for prepared storytelling expertise. We're looking for how well someone performs on the fly, in real time.

Well...no one's entered the RP individual achievement contest, and I haven't had much interest expressed in actual attendance this time around (except for Kyndig!. So, maybe twice a year is too ambitious.

At this point, I'm thinking of holding off with FidoCon until the fall.

Could I change my mind by the end of the week?

Only if folks show a real interest in:

1) Attending
2) Pitching their games
3) Talking about MU*-related issues in roundtables and presentations

The interest is appreciated, but too late for the RP awards contest and not enough to justify running the online con this time around. We'll try again in the fall! For some reason, I think people are just more interested in supporting their favorite games (like the first FidoCon MU* awards) than in tooting their own horns about roleplaying.

So be it! We'll give it another shot in September, after I get back from pitching the Fallen Earth MMORPG at DragonCon in Atlanta.

To be honest with you, that's quite a let down for me, and most likely to the roleplayers that were entered too.

You are right that the contest wasn't noticed earlier and we missed the deadline, but we were supporting you, and I have been actively promoting this contest on our forums and investing my time and effort talking to many who hadn't the faintest clue what fidocon was or muwiki or necromundus.

I understand that you are focused on noticing that you had low support, but perhaps you should focus on how you are supporting others; the key may lie within.

Xotl, your concerns are appreciated, but you and the players from Accursed Lands are the ONLY people who entered the contest, with 24 hours notice. I would not be doing ANY favors trying to judge the work you've done in that time frame while also trying to put on an online convention that's not garnered much interest this time around.

I'll be happy to peruse the logs and give some feedback so it's not a total waste for you, but I hope you can understand that any awards based off of a few submissions from ONE game would torpedo any credibility for the contest.

First off, you are totally right that despite my best efforts to promote and motivate, the deadlines were missed so you do not owe anyone anything, and have broken no promises.

The perspective that if all the entries in a mud vs mud competition are from one place it would not be a favor to hold judging for just one entry also makes sense.  Winner by default: Accursed Lands!  Is not what I want. But this is not a mud vs mud competition I am talking about.

I was excited about the individual rp achievement awards, and there are entries from several individuals -- 4 -- and many of the logs contain several players in them, so there are about 12 rpers to judge from.  I think it would be quite possible to pick a first, second and third place from within this breadth of field.

I do not see scarcity, I see abundance, I see good quality rping in the logs, and I also see many new people attracted to muwiki and posting there now.

The new faces on the MUWiki are always welcome, but even if I judged among 12 RPers from Accursed Lands, it would still have the perception of being focused on one game. That's where the award's credibility would come into question. Now, if your 12 RPers from Accursed Lands have samples of their RP from other games (as well as Accursed Lands) that they could post next time, I wouldn't feel quite as hesitant.

We're going to give it another try this fall. If there are non-RP MUD folks who want to give presentations on non-RP MUD topics, the invitation certainly goes out to them.
