Okay, before I start, sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I wasn't really sure where else to put it, so if it needs to be moved, let me know please? Anyway... I've been playing a kinda smallish MUD for almost a year now, and recently was approved to start writting and mapping new areas.  Not building, just writing the descriptions, and mapping the areas, leaving the building up to the Imms.  What I'm looking for is some help or guildlines to describing rooms, and anything else with mapping a writing a small village. So ...

Thanks in Advance,

Two good beginner resources for area writing are The Art of Building and the Skotos article archives.

Most muds will have their own house rules on what's acceptable. Since you play the mud, you probably have an idea already, but it doesn't hurt to ask the builder/head builder you will be cooperating with.

Good luck.

Another interesting article about writing descriptions:

http://www.brasslantern.org/writers/...criptions.html

It's about IF but most of it applies to muds.

Make sure that the mud you're working for gives you standards for what they find acceptable in their descriptions. A mud's descriptions should flow and be consistant, even between areas with different builders.

Other than that, make sure that your spelling and grammar are checked and that you describe in full sentences with plenty of adjectives. Keep in mind that giving your players an accurate picture is much better than using big words to sound lofty or "intelligent". Watch for dangling modifiers and such because that is the most common msitake found in descriptive writings.

Hope that helps and good luck.

Thanks for all the help! I've read through it all, and I've got a much better idea of what I'm doing now, as well as ideas of how to go about it. I'm sure I'll do a great job now with all the help, Thanks!
