i want to start building. although id like to know how to code, i rather build. how would i go about doing this? would i have to learn how to code anyway?

To build for muds you dont need to know anything about how to code.

The question you might need to ask yourself is, what do you want to build? And on which game?

To be fair, that does kind of depend on what kind of progging requirements a MUD might have for areas. I know our progs have progressed in complexity to the point that being a good builder implies that you can do some cool stuff with our prog scripting language.

It depends on what game you wish to build at, and what you want to build...

For someone that is completely new to the area of mud building and mostly want to build rather than code, i would say they don't really need to learn to code unless their game is built that way (most of them aren't though).

Later on, maybe it might be good to pick up some basic programming knowledge to be able to utilize scripts and similar (if the game provides them). Usually the games (or the script engine) have a tutorial for how to learn them so digging directly into C coding etc isn't really necessary unless the game really only provides that sort of building...

Right, there's definitely no digging into C necessary in our progs, at least. Even coding for the game itself doesn't require any C knowledge since you're doing it in Rapture's scripting language (which I'm told is C-like, but as Rapture's scripting language is the only coding language I know I can't personally say). The mobprog language is a language built using Rapture's scripting language. Rapture is written in C, but only one person (our CTO) ever touches the actual Rapture C-code.

I also wouldn't separate 'scripting' and 'building'. Instead, I'd say that 'building' may (depending on the requirements of the MUD) encompass design, writing, and scripting as tasks.

Some MUDs are willing to let you learn to build on-line on their MUD.

Ours for example. Look at the advertising for staff entry from us entitled "Ancient Chaos looking for literate builders.

Our MUD is SMAUG based and full building manuals and how- to building notes are readily available.
