This is a discussion on "Which codebase is best?" in the Top Mud Sites MUD Coding forum :

I begin in coding, I want to create a mud (classless, expless). I am a DartMUD player and I liked the LP codebase. I've heard of ROM or SMAUG... Which codebase do you think can be flexible and nice enough to use. SMAUG seems to be restricted to medieval period... but have interesting features... I learned the C coding while in university (I think I can handle it again ) I don't know if all the codebases are in C. Some people developped graphic interfaces for building rooms, and it seems interesting but I don't know if there ...

Well.. thank you, and sorry for these structure-less questions ^^;

Welp... it all depends on your priorities. If your first priority is flexibility, go with an LPMUD (the most advanced branch of which is Lars Duening's ldmud, which can be found at http://www.bearnip.com). If instead your priority is getting a MUD up and running ASAP, go with any of the DIKU derivatives.

I, of course, being a long-time resident of the MUD you mentioned, am an LPMUD zealot, so that's what I'll recommend .

Thank you I will seriously look at that ^__^
If you have a few important links to some compilers or editors, or building helps, I would be grateful.
Thanks a lot

My goal is to be able to create something interesting... but I don't want to start from scratch since I don't have the time.

I'm interested also by building tutorials and critics on the fighting and magic systems of differents good games (hehe AL and DM at least ^^; ) But I don't know if there are serious websites on the subject (except the Builders forum right here)

Personally (because it's what I started on, and mainly play), I use and prefer ROM, which is a Diku/Merc variant. I started long ago on an old ROM 2.3 mud which is now dead, moved to a couple of ROM 2.4 based muds, and now run and modify my own 2.4b6 ROM mud.

While I wouldn't say it's "the best codebase", for me, it does everything I want it to do, and I'm more than happy with it.

Well, like other people, I choose my codebase based on what I like to play. So I guess in your case LP would be the best code for you
