This is a discussion on "Single player MUD?" in the Top Mud Sites MUD Coding forum : Is it possible to run a MUD on my computer and play it by myself? If so, where can i download it? I've tried the rogue-like games, but i prefer the feel of a MUD more. I'm using Windows95. I don't know a lot about the coding behind MUDs so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!... |

Yes, it's possible.
Step 1) Download the codebase of your choice (ftp.game.org or mudmagic.com) Step 2) Download Cygwin (cygwin.com), basically it's a *nix shell on your computer, which you can use to compile the code using the Make command (in the code's src dir) Step 3) Run the mud Step 4) Set your client to connect to "localhost" on the port you chose. Have fun playing... by yourself.. I guess |

Technically, that would be a SUD then, not a MUD.

If you are looking for just the feel of a MUD but designed as a single player game I would suggest you google for interactive fiction. There are quite a few really enjoyable games out there ( if you look hard enough you might find a couple of mine) and , much like any other type of game, there are quite a few not so good ones. |

As...awful as the game is, there's a single person game much like you describe based on the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, single player, mud-style play, and you can either play it online with Java (still single player) or download it.
I've lost the link, and can't really be bothered to find it |

Hi Prufrok,
Do you mean that you just want to play something like a text-based adventure game? Or you actually want a MUD that you can set up to build and play on your own? Personally, I'd suggest the text-based adventure game as it's more set up to be single player, and often has more appropriate story lines than most MUD's that often have unfinished areas/items/quests and rely on RP or quests to make stories. Like Tavish said, I'd try a google search. Some games that I know of from the top of my head are: WandMaster, Virtua, Titanic, & Stellar Agent. (I don't vouch that these games are good, I just know of them and it might help your searching.) |
