I have a friend that is wondering if one it is possible to have RoT or RoM run off of windows as an open mud to players. Then if it is possible where would he look to find the program or the info on how to do so. I am wondering if it's possible and has anyone tried it.... He has it working for Smaug but not RoT or RoM.

I ran a RoM mud from my windows 98 computer for a while

since 98 is so unstable though, i discontinued it. if your friend is up for it he can use "StarterMud" by chris bunting.
there's a version for MSVC++ and cygwin.
i used the MSVC version, it worked great. you can find it at kyndig.com

Yes, its perfectly possible..

Keljorian gave a good example of what todo.

There is that, and theres always using Cygwin, or getting ZipSlack, which if you set it up properly, you can have it run in a little dos prompt window

Has your friend ever considered running it from Linux? If your main computer uses Windows, you can always go and find an old junk computer and set up Linux on it, as it is available for free, and is MUCH more stable than Windows. You might run it on a slower computer, but then again, you gain the reliability.

Another option for your friend might be to partition his own drive so that Linux could be ran, but I'm not sure he(or I for that matter) would want to continually have Linux running just for the mud.

I don't know much about running a mud from Windows, but my common sense(and my programs) tell me that it's not very stable, when stability really is a must.
