This is a discussion on "SMAUG tutorials" in the Top Mud Sites MUD Coding forum : K, i've been tryin' ta decipher SMAUG. The help files that came with the code base are... well.. greek to me. Is there a tutorial online that explains how it works in laymen's terms? I mean... REALLY dumb it down. I got it up and going (and i feel like that's a HUGE accomplishment) and i'm gettin' alittle help from a programer guy.. but very minimal. I've figured out a few things (just trial and error) but i know i could benefit alot from a guide line. Like step by step instructions. I've found ... |

I've found a few informational sites like www.smaug.org, but even that is a bit advanced to me. I've also been readin' up on C++ and found myself a decent compiler. If anyone has any basic things i could try with the compiler or in the SMAUG environment, i'd appreciate it. And if anyone is a aware of a super basic guide to SMAUG i'll give you my left arm... ok, well, maybe just a thank you, but a big one! |

The best I advice I can give anyone who wants to learn how to program is to go out and buy a pretty little book about programming. Sure, it might cost an arm and a leg, but if you are truly dedicated to being a MUD maintainer, it shouldn't be allot of money. 40 USD can get you a good book with easy, I got my book (albeit it is a bit confusing) for a mere 5 Euros...
Go pillage the local bookstore then |

What you need is the Source Code for the book to be any use to you. So make sure you also find the source code somewhere.

One note, a book on C++ won't do you a hill of beans of good to program for SMAUG, since
SMAUG is programmed in C, not C++. -Moridian |

Hmm.. ok, i see the advantages of gettin' a book on C/C++/etc. Actually, i'm plannin' on it. Thinkin' about takin' a programing program at my college in January, but in the meantime, i'd like to do some experimenting. Since everyone is sayin', read a book (which is ok advice of course), i guess no one's really aware of a good SMAUG/code/etc guide.
I'll keep lookin' tho. Thanks anyhow. |

See the thread "Teaching myself to Code, but..., " earlier on this forum - it had several useful suggestions for reading/learning.

I'd advice ya t' subscribe t' it, if ye didn't done so yet. And one more thing here will be... If ye're plannin' on toyin' around with SMAUG, mebbe it'll be best for ya to wait a bit 'till SMAUG 2.0 is released.. I be hearin' it shoulda be happenin' real soon... |

This isn't really what you are looking for, but it will help once you get a little farther into it. |
