This is a discussion on "Teaching myself to Code, but..." in the Top Mud Sites MUD Coding forum : I'm trying to teach myself to code, bit by bit... I bought one of those self-teaching books that comes with software for compling (MS Visual 6.0)... I was wondering... Is C++ the best language to start learning code?... |

I'd suggest C myself. It's alot smaller than C++, so you can master the syntax and memorize the language spec very quickly, letting you get to coding useful programs much sooner.
Just look at the size difference between K&R and Stroustrup, and you'll see what I mean |

Is there anywhere on the internet where I can learn C and start coding? I'm just trying to find another hobby to do, and I don't really want to spend money.

If you're going to learn to code in C, you'll really *really* really (can't emphasize that enough
This somewhat ok tutorial Or this one from How Stuff Works. Neal Spill's lessons look good. This page has some nice resources you can download. And of course, thou shalt heed The Ten Commandments for C Programmers! |

I've heard that the Absolute Beginner's Guide to C (by Greg M. Perry) is a good book for non-programmers who wish to learn C.
K&R (aka "The C Programming Language"), as mentioned previously, is definitely worth having as well - but it serves better as a reference than a learning tool, IMO. |
