Core - MUD Description
The game's world, officially known as Hermes 571-G (but called "Core" by the locals), is set 650 years into the future on a remote planet far from Earth. The inhabitants of this world are employees of The Company. The Company obtained exclusive rights to mine the rich metal and mineral deposits found on Core. Core's primary settlement, as a result, is the mining colony established by The Company.

Core's environment is harsh. Players live and work inside domes that protect them from the poisonous and deathly cold atmosphere outside. Outside the safety of the domes, life can only be sustained by wearing an environment suit.

Core has a true economy. Players work in The Company's mines, or mines owned by other players, to extract raw ore. The ore is refined into usable metals and alloys at player-owned Refinery shops. Refineries sell the metal to other players' shops that manufacture the weapons, armor, supplies and ammunition needed in day-to-day life on Core. The Company exports the unused metals to Earth and other worlds for a sizable profit.

Wealthier players can purchase their own personal mining dome ("PMD") and place it on Core's enormous wilderness map. When 3 or more PMDs are built next to each other, a PMD "Cluster" is formed and the Cluster is assigned a Rover that can shuttle players from The Company's central city complex to the Cluster. PMD owners can purchase and run a shop of their choosing, which is installed inside their PMD. Competing player-run "industrial complexes" are now sprouting up on Core's surface!

Core's help files are maintained by players and staff on our web-based Wiki. The Wiki's files are fully integrated into the in-game "help" command.

Core has been around since 1996, and there have been many changes in gameplay and staff since it first opened. Core's original creator has returned to active duty, as can be seen in our "changelog" that's posted on our public forum for all to review. The newbie experience was completely re-written in 2007, and with the introduction of easy-to-use building tools, players are helping the game grow and the level cap is starting to rise with the addition of new areas and quests.

The game server was moved off the owner's DSL and onto a professionally hosted environment in Summer 2008. Lag and disconnects are now a thing of the past!

So if you're tired of the same old "stock" game that never gets updated, come give Core a try! You just might end up joining our devoted crew of addicts.
