This is a discussion on "Looking for a similar game" in the Top Mud Sites Newbie Help forum : Hi, I'm pretty new to MUDs, but my boyfriend isn't and he's getting me hooked. In any case, I'm kinda visual when I choose my games, so I was wondering if there's any MUDs out there like that? I'm not advertising here, but the only MUD I know of is midwinter, so something like that game. It's not listed here as of now, and I don't wanna get yelled at for putting a web address in here (like at the other MUD sites' forums! bastards), so PM me if you need it ... |

I don't think anyone will mind if you put up a link to your mud.

Accursed Lands has a graphic wilderness map and pretty evocative descriptions, but an intense RP environment. If you're new to MUDs in general, it can be tough, but even if you don't like the game, we have a pretty elaborate newbie school and a flexible command input system that can help you get accustomed to a text environment, at the very least.

At thsi type of site, which is dedicated to providing as large a listing of MUDs as possible, posting a link to a mud isn't going to be frowned upon at all.
I think the problem you ran into (I'm guessing here using only the material you've provided) was that you posted a link for *another* mud on a *specific* mud's website/forum. In MUDs, that's almost always rule #0: No advertising other muds. And where it isn't, it's usually a common curtesy. Many muds have a hard time getting players and don't like to see people try to feed off of the few players they have. Other places have such a tight community that there's no chance of that, but the players may find it annoying anyway. Then the muds with larger P-bases just find it rude that you're trying (possibly) trying to suck their P-base simply because they're larger and more successful in terms of # of players. Be aware, I'm not accusing you or blaming you of anything; I'm just attempting to assist a new player in the world of MUDs. It is my theory that this is why you might have taken some flak for what seemed to you (and probably was) an innocent act. As for your *actual* question, I'm not sure I can help much. :/ (I know, I'm useless. sorry |

Ask your boyfriend to help define this 'midwinter' in terms of qualities of the game. Is it rp? Hack and slash? Fantasy? Superhero? Anime? Does it have mapping systems? Does it allow for autosaving equipment? Is it a specific codebase?
There are lots of 'categories' that games can fit into. If you know more about the game you like in terms of these categories, it's going to make it a lot easier for us to find you another one that suits your needs. |

Oh ok, well since no one sent me a pm anyway, http://www.midwinter.dk
It's not my mud, just one that my bf is helping on... and he talks about it alllllll day long. I suppose you can call it fantasy? I think it's dragons and swords type if that makes any sense. By visual, I mean one that has graphics helping the text adventure. Thanks |

I say this, forget about the graphical features of your old mud and come visit us at Daedal Macabre. If you like fantasy you'll like DM.
Uhh, daedalmacabre.org, port: 9000. Of all the muds I've ever played, this one kicks the most ass. |

Looks like you mean graphical as in front end, rather than a telnet front end. My first text based world, and favorite to date is Gemstone III, (play.net). It's a commercial mud which means you pay something like 10 dollars a month. I liked this game a lot until they started getting greedy, because of their large player base. There was anywhere from 1700 to 2000 people on at prime time about 6 years ago, then they got greedier and greedier and lost all their good roleplayers and highest level characters including myself. Pray this doesn't happen with your boyfriend's game.
Another 'graphical' game like you said would be unwritten.net. This was originally named Realms of Exile, and was the exiled game for all the unhappy gemstone III players. I was a builder for it, however, 7 years later, they still are testing. THey do have a nice front end program though, and it should be nice once it opens. However, again, you have to pay once it opens. |
