What Weapon Do You Prefer?

Just to put something other than ads and complaints up on the forums, I thought I'd post a series of light-hearted, yet still MU*-oriented, topics. And so for the first....

What type of weapon(s) do you tend to gravitate your characters toward in MU*s?

Re: What Weapon Do You Prefer?

Depends on the character. I usually play mercenaries, sellswords, or combat types and I like to use two handed swords since those technically should be the stronger weapon on most games.

I voted 'firearms', but I think my real answer would have been 'Tacnuke.'

Nice range, decent AoE, some residual, but not necessarily too much...

At one time in my mudding career I was wielding 'a huge pile of bull****' as my personal weapon and wearing 'Chanel No 5' as body armor.

On behalf of savage yet cuddly barbarians everywhere, I condemn this pole for the lack of cleaving implements... a good meat cleaver will never treat you wrong... even if it catches you making out with it's (insert female friend/family member of said cleaver here).

Bow down, for I am Brawny the barbarian wannabe, and I approve this message!!

I thought I included Axes but apparently I didn't. Bah, foolish barbarian-wannabe lumberjacks!

Considering some axes can function like clubs, consider the first option to read "Axes, Clubs, Maces, and Warhammers".

I was disappointed that the mighty pen was not included as a choice.

... and WP:AfD seems like a particularly effective weapon of choice this week too :)

Re: What Weapon Do You Prefer?

I was limited to only 10 selections and I had a list of well over a dozen in my head. In the process of grouping some of them, a bunch got omitted by accident. Bows and crossbows, axes, lasers all should be there. Thankfully this was just an exercise in some light-hearted forum discussion and nothing constituting serious inquiry.

Damn, "the pen" never occurred to me though. :-/

Re: What Weapon Do You Prefer?

You missed whips too, which seems like a cool weapon to me, especially after watching some old Old West movies.

If handled right it could be used as both an offensive and defensive weapon. You could trip and snare the opponent with a whip, as well as inflicting damage with it.
No other weapon can do that - or?

Re: What Weapon Do You Prefer?

Plenty of weapons can serve both offensively and defensively. One parries with a sword and can use a knife as a gauche for the same purpose. Likewise, a staff, a spear, or other polearm can function both offensively and defensively.

Re: What Weapon Do You Prefer?

Really, as Delerak first said, it depends on what my character's personality is. However, I find myself liking combat better when I'm either a mage, or a fleety, dagger using type. For this instance, I voted dagger, since it's very hard for me to find a good magic system anywhere.

Re: What Weapon Do You Prefer?

Yes, but commands like parry and block are both instantaneous.
Molly is right that a whip is different, it could be used to also delay the player. Tripping them would work like bash, meaning that they had to stand up again. And snaring them with the whip would stop them from fleeing for a few seconds. No other weapon could do that. In return the damage would probably have to be a lot lower than a sword, but for a twohanded fighter it would be an interesting option.

Re: What Weapon Do You Prefer?

A. They don't have to be instantaneous.

B. If you have any actual familiarity with real weapons and combat, you'll discover that there's a lot more to using them than just "swing and hit". A staff is one of the most versatile weapons (not to mention simplest) you can find.

C. As for "snaring them", a net can also be used for that. Weighted on the corners, it's a lot more dangerous than you might think.

Re: What Weapon Do You Prefer?

There are various chain weapons and flails that could serve a similar purpose, such as the surujin (weighted chain), kusarigama (chain sickle), Kyoketsu Shoge (bladed weapon attached to a rope), three-section staff, etc.

My implementation of the bull whip allows you to entangle arms, legs, necks and weapons, strike to the face (hitting the eyes on a critical hit), and perform a "sonic boom" next to your opponent's ear (deafening them for a short time).

If you're interested in whips, the Asian chain whip is also worth looking at. As well as being usable to strike, hook and entangle an opponent (or their weapon), it also has a dart on the end which can be used to slash or pierce - and can be coated in poison.

Re: What Weapon Do You Prefer?

Heh - you guys are deadly. :)
I was rather thinking along the lines of the common bull whip, after seeing it being handled in some western films. I'm not really into Asian martial arts myself.

But I have no argument with you. I merely wanted to point out what interesting side effects a weapon of whip type could have, and your posts have rather emphasized my point. To me those fancy Japanese weapons are whips too.

My preference is to convince someone else to do the job for me so my character doesn't have to break a fingernail.
Bonus points if I only have to buy them a drink to thank them for bringing me the victim's head.

Re: What Weapon Do You Prefer?

Well, I tend to be more interested in magic-using classes, and a staff tends to be good for defense, so that's usually my first choice. Barring that, I'd go with swords.
