Re: Hello

Greetings all! I'm male, born 1961, rping since 1978. I'm currently on 6Dragons, Achaea, elDorado, Haven, Aabsolom, and Avatar. My first mud was Melmoth around 1998 which got me interested before... if there is interest in an essay on ways to make a good rp mud, I'll post one. I'd rather give constructive suggestions than make lists of muds and the things they do which I don't think they should.

I'm glad women are on muds, it adds an interesting flavor to them. Thanks, Alera!

That sounds so male!:) Hrmps at the thought of women adding a bit of "flavor" to the male world of men.

Tugs at her braid and mutters something about men in total Nynaevean manner!

Perhaps you got it all wrong. I'm also a male MUD addict, so I can try to translate that for you:

- The women are uninspiring, devastating bores. However if a woman plays a quality game such as a MUD, that adds a bit of "flavor" to her! ;--P

In the end, it may even make that rare specimen an actual subject of interest!

P.S. I don't like feminists. Maybe if I knew how to cook them properly, I would have changed my mind... ;--P

What a civilized, intelligent and charming response. Most inspiring, my good fellow.

It would also provide a glimmer of explanation why there ARE so few women on most MUDs.

Re: Hello

Kleothera > why there ARE so few women on most MUDs

Well, speaking seriously, I guess the primary reasons behind that are different. For example, Arctic is a hack-n-slash DikuMUD with little roleplay involved. In many cases, I neither know the gender of the other characters in my group, let alone the sex of the players behind them, nor care about all that.

I'd say that the real difference is in the preferences. In my experience, a lot of males find it exciting to entertain themselves with abstract things (be it science or playing in a casino), while most females prefer to spend their time on more substancial things. That does not necessarily mean that the women are less fit for the abstract tasks, only that they are usually less fascinated with the far-out concepts. Discussing whether this is a direct biological difference or the result of an entrenched tradition is a subject for a serious research and is hardly on-topic for this thread.

To illustrate my point, the best female chess players are about as good as the best male chess players; however, the total number of male players is greater than the number of female players by orders of magnitude. There are no serious sexist obstacles that can prevent a female player from playing chess if she really wants to; the women who don't play chess simply don't like that kind of entertainment.

Same with MUDs - to suffer from sexist stereotypes, a woman should play for long enough to be noticed and recognized. If the majority of the new players are male, that's not because the women are treated badly, but because they have better things to do.

Re: Hello

Perhaps. Perhaps not. NW has at least fifty percent women. On average it is 50/50. Perhaps this could be a new thread topic. I know you said on "most MUDs" so my guess would be that women gravitate to more roleplay stylized games vs combat oriented. It's hard to say but our Merchant Guild which is mostly for roleplay and creativity is mostly women guilded. Looking at the who list shows 10 merchants currently and 8 of them are women, but then again we have several female thieves and fighters. So who knows?

Are women more creative then men? Better actors? Better roleplayers? Food for thought.

Re: Hello

I agree, we need to separate this out as a new thread. Firstly, because they ARE different and secondly, it needs to go beyond the initial episode of she-said-he-said that this discussion was triggered by.

Re: Hello

Go away for a day or three and come back to a full out discussion on women in muds in my hello thread. :) this place sure is going to be interesting indeed. ^_^ gonna see if I can get my hubby to sign up to he tends to be more of a lurker type though.
