If you're going to be attending GDC (the annual Game Developer's Conference...), come to my panel and learn about how independent game developers manage to make money without a publisher. The panel is at noon on Friday the 7th of March, and is entitled, "Proven Strategies for Self-Publishing on the Internet: What Works and What Doesn't. " Panelists are myself, John Vechey, founder of Popcap.com, Gabe Zichermann, VP of Strategic Planning at Trymedia Systems, Joseph Varet, VP of Biz-dev at The Groove Alliance, and Daniel Hart, Senior Director of Games and Entertainment at Yahoo.
Incidentally, if you're someone looking to break into the games industry, GDC is a great place to get an idea of what being a professional developer is all about. The focus is on developers and development (as opposed to publishing and business, which E3 focuses on). I believe about 10,000 developers attend annually.
