Looking for a Well-Coded RP Mud

I'm looking for a free (or perks) MUD that's well-coded, but RP enforced.

What do I mean by well-coded? Something like Aardwolf. It doesn't have to be that advanced, but it has to have ANSI and extensive maps (on the website is fine).

It can't be super difficult like Armageddon, either.

Thanks for the suggestions in advance.

Hey there,

You could try our RP-enforced MUD, Carrion Fields. Find us at We have extensive maps and community info and a respectably sized, very dedicated community. You can connect at:

Host: 208.117.43.240
Port: 4449

Unfortunately our game is quite challenging for a new player, but it has extremely deep and engrossing roleplay when you tackle the basics. We're completely free, professionally developed and have been established for 20 years. We are still in development today with a team of community selected area designers, coders and so on.

Any further questions about our game, or our community information? Send me a PM and I'll give you some further details.

In any event, good luck finding a MUD and we hope you'll give us a look in.

Not sure exactly what you are looking for but I would recommend Ateraan at or Threshold at and here is why:

Both are large worlds with intense enforced roleplay.
Both have unique guilds and races.
Both are well coded and have substantial player bases.

I'm unsure about Threshold but I believe maps are available for both on the website or in the game itself. However, unlike Aardwolf, in order to maintain the playability and enjoyment of the player with strict roleplay, both have rules on areas, guilds, and gear. In other words, you won't find detailed (D&D like) manuals on the weapons, armour, guilds, etc. This is so you can find out as the player how items work and how to quest and adventure.

Specific benefits of Ateraan:
2 starting areas for the beginner and the expert roleplayer.
Unique shipping with combat at sea and deep sea fishing.
Player run caravans, theatrical events, and invasions that are AI and staff controlled.
Both permadeath and resurrected death dependant on your roleplay and where you start.

Specific benefits of Threshold:
Incredible detailed Religions.
Numerious, robust quests.
Detailed, richly written massive world.
Unique races and guilds.

Either game is very fun and can give you years of rich, intensive roleplay.

Perhaps try them both!

Enjoy!

Great post NWA and good explanation of both of our games.

Unwritten Legends or The Inquisition: Legacy are probably more your thing. UL doesn't have permadeath and TI has permadeath but you really need to go looking for permadeath in order to die. I'm pretty sure that they both have maps on their website.

Ateraan definitely isn't well-coded. Try picking corn for fifteen minutes.

Threshold's religion RP is about squabbling over who smashed the idol of the other guy's religion, and anyone can say that a guild or class is "unique" if the class is the same concept as everywhere else but with skills specific to that particular game.

If I were the admins of either of the games this guy is promoting I'd be cringing.

Not exactly an admin, but I don't know why dark acacia is recommending us. He rather pointedly dislikes the game.

But! UL really is well coded, and being updated on an irregular, but constant basis.
Almost the entire game is mapped, and we're certainly RP enforced.

There's a small form needed to sign up, and a short wait to be white-listed.

I'm recommending UL and TI:L because they're closer to what the topic creator wants, and because I'm tired of seeing spam for the same two or three MUDs in every request topic regardless of what the seeker wants.
