(Why be different) Hello.

Hello. I love MUDs, clearly else I wouldn’t be here, now my problem is that when I go home for the summer, college student, I don’t have internet. What I want is to be able to play some MUDs at home, basically some downloadable ones. So if you have any suggestions on that they would be greatly appreciated.

My main reason for being here is I would like to create my own MUD. Now the problem is I have no internet at home and all of the sites I’ve seen that I can download stuff requires the internet to be able to maintain use. What I want is something I can download and work on offline at my house on my computer.

On the issue of downloading precodes, I see the logic in it especially since I have no experience in
programming. So since I don’t have any knowledge on this subject I default to everyone here. Also I would like to make an attempt of starting something from scratch. Now no need to fill the thread with it takes a lot of work, effort, knowledge and all that. Of course I know that. That’s why I would like 1.) A recommendation for something that I can use for as a starter and 2.) A source of information that I can obtain that can be of help to me during my trails.

Thank you to everyone who has suggestions.

Re: (Why be different) Hello.

I've actually never heard of a mud codebase that can only run online, nor can I think of a good reason why a mud would be created that way unless the owner is massively paranoid that his code will be stolen and so incorporates some crazy DRM scheme.

(Almost) any mud codebase you might choose can be run locally. You connect to your local machine by specifying 'localhost' (no .org .net or .com) as the server name, or use the IP address 127.0.0.1 (actually any 127.x.x.x address will do), and of course whatever port # you've got the code running on.

So basically take your pick.

You could install Cygwin, which allows compiling and running *nix software on Windows.

Another option would be a VM like VirtualBox.

Stripes, I'm interested in your request for (2), a source of information. What are you looking for exactly? If you had to describe it in some detail, what would you say?
