LIGHTNING BOLT! LIGHTNING BOLT!

Without that man we might never have had such comedy classics as the above, along with so much fun in general playing roleplaying games. At least he knew he made a difference, which is all anyone can ask for really :)

Sigh, that really sucks. I had dinner once with he and Dave Arneson (co-creator of D&D) and I probably came off as a total fanbois. It's hard not to deify these guys when without their work my life would have taken a completely different path.

R.I.P. Gary.

I met him, too, long ago at a Gemcon speaking to the tournament DMs.
Geeky as it is, it shaped a life path for me. The guy didn't spoon-feed his world to people. He left a buffet table for world-builders to fill their plate from.

In this really bizarre little altered reality in which many of us spend inordinate amounts of time, he created the clerics that will continue to resurrect him. Every time we play.

It's possible that he might even say he didn't create the worlds that followed, but like Tolkien, he was entrusted as a key-bearer to unlock some ancient doors. I hope wherever he went, his vorpal blade always goes snicker-snack.
