Visual as in... Graphical map? I don't quite understand.

Accursed Lands has a graphic wilderness map and pretty evocative descriptions, but an intense RP environment. If you're new to MUDs in general, it can be tough, but even if you don't like the game, we have a pretty elaborate newbie school and a flexible command input system that can help you get accustomed to a text environment, at the very least.

Ask your boyfriend to help define this 'midwinter' in terms of qualities of the game. Is it rp? Hack and slash? Fantasy? Superhero? Anime? Does it have mapping systems? Does it allow for autosaving equipment? Is it a specific codebase?

There are lots of 'categories' that games can fit into. If you know more about the game you like in terms of these categories, it's going to make it a lot easier for us to find you another one that suits your needs.

I say this, forget about the graphical features of your old mud and come visit us at Daedal Macabre. If you like fantasy you'll like DM.
Uhh, daedalmacabre.org, port: 9000.
Of all the muds I've ever played, this one kicks the most ass.

Looks like you mean graphical as in front end, rather than a telnet front end. My first text based world, and favorite to date is Gemstone III, (play.net). It's a commercial mud which means you pay something like 10 dollars a month. I liked this game a lot until they started getting greedy, because of their large player base. There was anywhere from 1700 to 2000 people on at prime time about 6 years ago, then they got greedier and greedier and lost all their good roleplayers and highest level characters including myself. Pray this doesn't happen with your boyfriend's game.

Another 'graphical' game like you said would be unwritten.net. This was originally named Realms of Exile, and was the exiled game for all the unhappy gemstone III players. I was a builder for it, however, 7 years later, they still are testing. THey do have a nice front end program though, and it should be nice once it opens. However, again, you have to pay once it opens.
