Coding and Building

Ok, just out of curiosity what is the difference between a MUD coder and a MUD builder?

Re: Coding and Building

A mud coder is someone who works with the code that creates the core systems of the game itself.

A builder is someone who creates content such as areas, mobs, and loot. Usually, builders write and script using what the coders coded to create content for the game.

Some coders are also builders, and some of the duties sometimes overlap depending on the code base.

Re: Coding and Building

Additionally, a coder would have to have knowledge of the code language that the game is written in while the builder may not. Hence, proficiency in C (assuming that's what the code is) would be needed for a coder position but not for a builder who might only have to simply know how to write a sentence in English (assuming it's an English-based game). :)

Take care,

Jason

It's also worth remembering that the terms are usually applied to DIKU derivative games and don't necessarily mean much in other codebase families.

I think Milawe said it perfectly. I'm curious if there is any MUD that isn't written in C. So far I've not run across one (perhaps a new fangled java based MUD).

Orrin, what games don't use such terms? As even in large MMO's they utilize those titles (and a slew of other titles as you have writers, scripters, artists, etc.)

My game resembles that remark!
;)

Modified version of CoffeeMUD, so a Java engine with a MYSQL database.

I wrote a multi database system on the sql server platform a few years back. That sounds so interesting, I can't imagine reviewing the code on that one. Do you just play from the web then? No client so to speak?

Plays like a regular MUD.

Address:
throes.slayn.net
Port:
1200

Been looking for some more testing lately. Just added extended hit-locations, with armor-type versus damage-types, for melee damage.

Still in perpetual alpha.

Re: Coding and Building

In DIKU terms the difference is usually that a coder works within the shell on the source code and a builder works within the game using some kind of OLC. I haven't conducted a survey or anything, but my experience of other servers is that while people may talk about building or coding, there is less notion of 'coder' and 'builder' as distinct named roles.
