Iron Realms announces Starmourn - its 6th MUD.

Congrats! IRE is so productive and comes with new projects...

Now this has a different theme but the gameplay is planned to be similar to the previous muds?

There'll be some similarities but we're trying to deliver a different experience, not just Achaea in space.

Re: Iron Realms announces Starmourn - its 6th MUD.

Is it going to have its own skill system? I never really cared for the IRE games' skill systems, or the healing system, for that matter.

I am tired of the fantasy genre, so if Starmourn really isn't Achaea In Spaaaace I might actually try it out.

Congrats and good luck, this could be really interesting. I wonder how IRE will design this...if it were me I think I'd try to do some kind of EVE/Ingress but roleplay-focused mobile-first game. If they could nail a great RP UI on mobile that'd be pretty innovative I'd think.

Definitely not going to be a mobile-first game. That's just not our strength, and discovery on mobile is even harder than discovery on the web.

We haven't announced anything about that yet, sorry!

Why announce something if there will be no details?

Aren't Iron Realms games still pay-to-win? Why wouldn't you have a budget for even a short video?

dark acacia, it's an advertisement/announcement. He doesn't need to put in all the details. He already told you the name of the game, you already know who produces it, and you know the general genre. If none of those intrigue you, then don't play. If any of those things are of interest, then you can try it out.

Iron Realms isn't pay to win. You can play their games for free, but you can also buy credits to progress faster than if you didn't buy credits. The end result is the same, just one takes less time and costs money and the other takes more time and is free.

As for an explanation of their budget, it really shouldn't be any of your concern.

Re: Iron Realms announces Starmourn - its 6th MUD.

I really, really want to try a new space MUD. Seriously. Even if it has the same skill system as Achaea, I'll try it out. I just hate it when an announcement is all hype and little else, especially when there *has* to be two or more threads to announce it.

If Achaea isn't Pay to Win, it's Pay for Perks. Either way, when I played I knew that there was a lot of money moving in one direction. It's kind of curious when there's money being made but the announcer complains about having no budget for a new venture.

Releasing teasers is like entertainment marketing 101. You see it in movies, games, all for a good reason. This is hardly our first time at the rodeo.

And we got some media coverage from the teaser too, which was the point.

We do have a budget. Spending it on custom 3d video is a waste of money for this market though. When you're targeting such a small market you need to be pretty careful where you decide to invest.

Gaming for a small market, but not small enough to get fluff pieces on some websites apparently. There's other sci-fi MU* games out there, you know

Yep! They drove some traffic to us at zero cost to us. Both those sites subscribe to our newsletter, I believe, or maybe follow our Twitter account.

Yep, there are. I'm not sure what your point is though.

Nice start! Any influence from old TSR stuff like Star Frontiers?
Almost found myself coding that one after my Modern game Top Secret back in the early 2000s.
I signed up for the mailing list, have fun back in the saddle in dev!

Never played it I'm afraid, though I'm of that generation - I still have the original AD&D sourcebooks for instance.

Hope you like what you see!

So did Starmourn Fever burn out? It's been a little while now.

Nope! Planning on putting another update here in the next day or two. Newsletters have been going out close to weekly though.

After 9th September 2016, will @the_logos be removing the Midkemia link from his signature as it gets killed off and IRE drops to running four MUDs for the moment?

Re: Iron Realms announces Starmourn - its 6th MUD.

What that has to do with this thread, I have no idea, but thanks for bumping it!

And yes, that I will.

Re: Iron Realms announces Starmourn - its 6th MUD.

Well it is just that some might see "6th MUD" as meaning IRE will have six actually running at the same time (which they won't) - I guess if you are intending to re-purpose the Midkemia Server hardware you have some time to spare before installing a certain other Server on it. :D

As for me, the killing of MO means someone will likely to have to pull/edit/purge the things that reference Midkemia in the client (for which I feel I am the only one coding at present!)
