This is a discussion on "Welcome to the new hangout!" in the Top Mud Sites Roleplaying and Storytelling forum :

Greetings! First, kudos to Synozeer for the look and feel of the new forums. Personally, I like it a lot. Second, this gives us a chance to start over fresh with topics of discussion. A couple of ground rules I want to establish from the get-go: - No blatant recruiting posts in this forum unless I've specifically called for them. In some circumstances, I certainly will. Mentioning your MU* in your forum posting sig is, of course, allowable. - Keep discussions civil. This never really became much of a problem in the roleplaying forum before, but the proliferation of flame ...

Greetings!

First, kudos to Synozeer for the look and feel of the new forums. Personally, I like it a lot.

Second, this gives us a chance to start over fresh with topics of discussion.

A couple of ground rules I want to establish from the get-go:

- No blatant recruiting posts in this forum unless I've specifically called for them. In some circumstances, I certainly will. Mentioning your MU* in your forum posting sig is, of course, allowable.

- Keep discussions civil. This never really became much of a problem in the roleplaying forum before, but the proliferation of flame threads elsewhere on TMS could always spread.

- Feel free to start your own topics and ask your own questions for others to answer. I'm a moderator. As such, I'll often come up with topic material to discuss, but I'm also happy just, well, moderating, and letting everyone else run their own discussions.

Again, thanks for dropping in and I look forward to all of your contributions to the threads!

To add further detail on Brody's post, from some of what I witnessed on the forum that preceded the polish of IkonBoard:

This forum is for the discussion of all things roleplay. And like most things, there's a million strategies and methods of roleplaying and implementing it into a game. We have RPI MUDs, we have MUSHes, we have hack and slash MUDs that are looking for ways of spurring a little bit of RP in the form of quests.

Occassionally, topics here and on TMC have degenerated into, 'my way is the best.'

Just realize that roleplaying is a multi-definition word that can be interpreted a great deal of ways. I'm sure Brody will agree that it is the place of this forum to discuss these various methods and assist each other in their interpretations.

It isn't the place to claim that one style (or codebase) is better.

Hey E.Falconer,

This is TMS, not TMC.

It's not meant to say which codebase is better, no. But in the context of roleplaying, we are talking primarily about assuming a part - acting, storytelling, interacting - as opposed to hunting for loot and killing mobs.

That said: There's no reason a game whose primary focus is gathering loot and killing mobs can't have good RP. If I had developed my game as an LP MUD, for example, I'd still be finding some way to tell evolving stories.

This is also true. But as TMS continues to grow, it gets some of the same sort of flame wars that plague TMC. As moderators, we'll have our work cut out for us.
