This is a discussion on "Talking Point: Resources/Lore/Helpful sites" in the Top Mud Sites Roleplaying and Storytelling forum : In this thread, I'd like participants to discuss their favorite "themes" in games - particularly the more established themes - and provide some links to helpful information sites that players can use to familiarize themselves with canon such as worlds, races, etc. Please - and this goes for folks from my games too - no linking to MU* main home pages. But if you've got your own personal Armageddon (or other game) site with tips for newbies, however, feel free to link to it.... |

For the Tolkien folks out there: check out the Encyclopedia Arda.
We actually link to it in numerous places in our MUD's chargen process; there's so much well-researched Middle-earth lore there that it pretty much eliminates the need for us to assemble and host it ourselves. Very handy resource. |

And for everything else, there's The Wikipedia.

I hate to sound totally unoriginal, but I think that the Warhammer fantasy series has a really good theme behind it.
I got hooked on the hobby a while back, (before mudding). Anyways, I really like the High Elf / Dark Elf / Dwarves animosity they worked out. I'm also very parital to the lizardmen, I think their Aztec flavour is really cool. Mind you, you have to buy the codexes to read all about this, but they're definitly worth a look. www.games-workshop.com No, I don't work for GW (games workshop) |

Possibly even less original than Rundvelt's post, what about a theme a LOT of muds out there seem to follow, even if somewhat loosely in some cases, D&D and it's various offshoots. Those wanting follow this theme will find a wealth of information at various sites, but the one I like is Wizards of the Coast I know it's mainly designed for desktop games but there is still a lot of very useful information there.
