I shut that mud down over a decade ago, for a number of reasons (including the realisation that the entire concept of "rooms" was an unnecessary artificial limitation), but I've never viewed the ban hammer as a good solution to a design problem.

My solution did use an array of pointers. In fact it worked almost exactly as you've just described.
