I hate to sound totally unoriginal, but I think that the Warhammer fantasy series has a really good theme behind it.
I got hooked on the hobby a while back, (before mudding).
Anyways, I really like the High Elf / Dark Elf / Dwarves animosity they worked out. I'm also very parital to the lizardmen, I think their Aztec flavour is really cool.
Mind you, you have to buy the codexes to read all about this, but they're definitly worth a look.
