Actually, you can't compare standalone mud clients to websocket browser clients, because none of the latter exists (to my knowledge).

Your complaints about existing flash and java based clients are understandable, as they are infact external objects embedded in HTML, and one can't expect them to work with readers wery well.

Websockets allow to design the client as a normal, interactive website, just like these forums youre using.

You don't have to worry, we're discussing some underlying mechanics of no concern to new players.
