For distant-future stuff, think Dune! Not in the direct sense, but I like the idea that the culture and technology retain peculiar echoes of things we see in the world today. More specifically, thinking about the kinds of accommodations a sentient mineral or plant would require could lead to some really neat areas. What sorts of resources would they want from each other? How would allegiances unfold? Do mineral-people worship organic life for its complexity?
