As far as the text vs. graphics debate goes, you can make a distinction between the representation of the virtual world and the interface. A text world doesn't have to have a purely textual interface.
Yes people use text all the time, whether it's twitter or sms or participating in forums and blogs on the web. What they don't do is interact with these applications solely by issuing typed commands and the text as presented isn't usually white on black in a fixed width font.
