A more viable solution for pay-for-perks muds might be to "pay" the players with whatever currency is normally purchased for cash. Assuming this special currency was transferrable, the player could then sell it to other players for real cash if they wished, but otherwise it would be rather like paying people in gift vouchers - the "money" has to be funnelled back into your game.
