I know that Threshold is purely Pay to Play. You are going to get a.... yearly(?) fee. You can play for free for a number of hours, twenty I think, then your account will be frozen until you make a payment. Of all the pay to play muds, I prefer Threshold. I've never gone further than the trial hours, but the stretch I did play there was very, very fun. Neat quests, fairly unique gameplay, and, my own favorite feature, the Heritage levels. Great game.

Carrion Fields is completely free, from what I remember. Donations are accepted for server fees and the like, much like many other muds, but without any in-game compensation.

I'm sure others will pipe up to add to what I have.
