These days it's pretty quick and easy to create a graphical front-end, and if you browse the MUSHclient and Mudlet forums you'll see players designing some really nice-looking custom interfaces for their favourite muds.

Sadly the interest from mud owners often seems to be rather luke-warm, but there is still some definite progress being made by a number of the larger muds in terms of improving communication with the client.
