Websockets clients can already to any telnet-based mud. You don't need to throw away 20 years of mud client development just to support websockets.
Browser clients are a good way of lowering the entry barrier for new players, because you remove the need to download and install software before playing. But you'll alienate many established mudders if you force them to use a browser client - particularly if it doesn't offer the same features as their normal client.
