I actually have no idea - I didn't stick around long enough to find out, haha.

I did find one MuD named Distant Lands who seems to do this (from their website):

"Segmentation code allows those who are roleplaying to not hear and/or see what non-roleplayers are doing or saying (other than movement), so your roleplaying experience will not be interrupted. Those who are not roleplaying can see everyone who is roleplaying, what they are doing, saying and hopefully join in on the fun."

But logging in, I don't think this is the same one that I once found, and it seems to be fairly unpopulated unfortunately, which makes it difficult to see the segmentation in action.
