Maybe he thought that what he did wasn't wrong and "stupidly" took a stance for his beliefs? If he got his "life pretty much destroyed" like you say then it sounds as if the company behind the game did more damage than his bots ever could do.

You know what is really scary? If you take a look at on xfire and look at the graph you see that totally(those with xfire atleast) people spend about 200.000 hours per day on WoW. Multiply it by 1/(365*24) you get that a bit above 22 years are played away per day on WoW. Hopefully a lot of that is afk time
