IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is another system for chatting. You can start a chat group (called a channel) or join existing ones (many people setup channels based on specific activities and/or interests). Some of the most common IRC networks are IRCnet (European), EFnet (North American), Undernet, and Dalnet. Some IRC clients I've used are mIRC (for Windows) and BitchX (for SunOS).
