To be honest, the results of the 20 years mud client development aren't very impressive at all. A web client written in no time can put to shame all of them.
Mud clients purpose is to address the shortcomings of raw telnet stream, there's no reason to keep them besides improving the experience of old telnet muds, and I remind you, the topic is about writing a new codebase from scratch.

Yes, we can throw away 20 years of mud client development, it was a dead end.
There are no rational reasons to stick to old technology, only nostalgia. Games are important, not technology.
It's time to move on.
