Talking

I don't know about you but most MUD's I've been to have a pre-defined history or have been running for so long that newcomers often feel apart from what's going on. Time, patience and making a lot of noice can alter that but I've always wanted to be a part of something that grows and where, as a player, I feel a true part of the world. So, I've been thinking...

I'd like to help someone startup a MUD - I'd like to think I have good writing abilities (Ask anyone on the MUSHs I've been on! ) and would be prepared to shoulder a considerable amount of the burden of writing and website creation etc. However, before you say I should be posting elsewhere or joining all those asking for builders, the reason I haven't is that I want to create MY IDEA!

Imagine a world without civilisation (Sort of a caveman scenario or rather a post-apocalyptic world considering all the people playing would have a knowledge of TV, fast-food etc! ). There are NO TOWNS or settlements. Just mountains, forests, grasslands, shorelines, cliffs, ocean shallows etc. Every new player must FIND FOOD, kill with bare hands to start with or collect materials (A stick from the forest and a sharks tooth from the shoreline...) and MAKE THEIR OWN WEAPONS AND CLOTHES (...in this case a spear! ). Some people will only be able to make certain things so they will need to trade, maybe food, water or raw materials. Once a player has gathered enough sticks they can BUILD THEIR OWN HOUSE where-ever they want, submitting a description to an IMM who will change the room descriptions involved. This becomes a permanent place where the player can store equiptment safely. Players will need to group together at this early stage to protect themsleves from larger predators or raiders from other islands. This will create cities and towns from scratch upon which point MOB shops can be added, technology will advance to include ore and metalurgy.... You see? Players will vote for leaders of towns, create history themselves, discover things for themselves, eventually build boats and discover other islands... and so on.

This is just the brief outline and the tip of the iceberg. I would start the MUD myself but I do not have the facilities or know-how as to how I would do this. PLEASE drop me a line to find out more. If you want to start up a MUD using my idea as a sort of framework then please do so but INCLUDE ME in it!!!

Email me for more details and if you're interested...

Oh, I should have included, spells are available to those that want them...but you will have to find the right ingrediants. And there would be other races but they will start in different places but all on the same island. This will mean that elves will not turn up in the middle of human areas for a while but more mixing will take place...perhaps creating half-elves and so on.

Let me know what you think even if you can't offer what I want. All ideas and opinions welcomed and I'll try to reply asap.

Sounds a bit like Wolfworld.

I created something fairly similar to what you describe, but I automated all of the building - I would recommend you look into doing the same. Building the odd room is enough of a pain as it is, but if your players are going to build entire cities it's quickly going to become a LOT of work.

Ultima Online also works in quite a similar way.

It sounds like a great concept, but won't it end up evolving into what you are seeking to get away from? History would be built by the first wave of players and newcomers to the MUD would be faced with having to fit into that history. The only way to prevent this would be to periodically destroy everything and start from scratch (which would still provide an interesting concept).

I wasn't able to find the actual game but the link to the conversation brings up some interesting points for me to think about. Overall though, I don't see the games as being the same. The setting would be totally different and players would have to go out on their own, particularly at the beginning as there is nothing pre-created. There is no compulsion for them to stay together or build together other than that together they make life easier and can kill harder monsters.

A player could create a hermit that lives in the mountains, collecting just enough food and water and killing the odd creature and just exploring. Or a socialite who persuades others to build homes near him and gets them to vote him mayor of this new town. There would be little adventuring to be done inside the towns for quite a while until they grew to a significant size and then maybe sewers or deserted buildings maybe created.

Over time towns may well fight other towns for food, water or land but there is no compulsion. That is down to whoever is elected mayor and he is responsible only to his voters! The past of the future will be decided by the players...with some guidence perhaps in the form of an invading foreign lot of MOBs from another island. If they don't kill them all they will be wandering all over the island for a while.

As for Ultima, maybe but that's graphical and it costs.

Thanks for the thoughts though. If your game is still up and running perhaps I could have a look. If not, well...maybe you'd like to start one up again?!

Well Gad, essentially that is true but it's my intention to create quite a vast starting island. Should a player start where there is one or two large cities they could meet some friends and move away and create another or simply move away themselves. Ultimately I don't want to force them to do anything other than what actually happened on earth thousands of years ago when tribes stopped moving around. People still moved away and created new tribes.

A lot later into the game newcomers will be able to be part of the exploration of other islands. Reporting back to their homes and gaining a part of history that way. History will be on-going (Recorded and transcribed on the website.). Obviously not everyone can become a famous warrior, explorer, mage, city leader but the chances are there if they want to take them. For example, once magic has been discovered and has fostered a generation of mages a mage (Basically an IMM with a lot of MOB allies) from another island could invade and set up a lair somewhere to launch attacks at nearby cities that don't pay a toll.

Or anything could in theory happen. To start with all players will be concerned with is finding out what they can do with all the debris left around the island such as what could you do with that seaweed on the coastline? Or with the shells? Can you get any food by killing a gull? And so on....

Thanks for the input!

Your idea sounds great. I've always gone for the medieval type atmospheres, but a caveman or post-apocolyptic society sounds pretty fun too. I hope you keep us all posted if you succeed in making this new mud.

I must say that I find your idea very interesting. For a long time I have been looking for a MUD where one could just live.
I would be very interested in building this MUD wit you.

Levanon

P.S. Please don't respond with advertisements for a MUD I might be interested in, I've tried quite a few.
