I want to make a MUD

How many times has that been said over all these long years?

For me, it's always been a goal that has nagged at me since I was about 14 years old (I am now 24). It always took the backseat to school, and then work, and then other game projects. Now I find myself agonizing over ploughing headlong into doing an engine from scratch, or using something dated that doesn't really conform to what I hope to achieve. MUDs have come a long way -- tech has only become better, but as they say, "The times are a-changin'." Despite Lasher's post , I do still feel that MUDs are in decline; this, combined with the fact that "RPI games" are the new black, makes it seem like my goal may not be time well spent.

I suppose this is a thread made for the "would-be" administrators. If you have ever had plans to open a MUD, what is the major factor holding you back? More importantly, where would you take your MUD if you could in order to make it successful?

Re: I want to make a MUD

First, I should disclose that I'm not a prospective MUD owner, but an actual one.

If you're a prospective MUD owner and your goal is to make a successful MUD, and you are wondering whether it's worthwhile, then the answer (for you) is no. Clearly, you haven't defined "success" for yourself in a way that will make this question easy to answer (or even irrelevant to ask). Clearly, you lack the passion that an enthusiast project such as this one absolutely requires. There's nothing wrong with that--it's just that facing up to it may save you a lot of mental anguish.

I've been a successful MUD owner for two years now. It's been the most fun I've had in my adult life. I don't remember ever asking myself if it's worth it.

Re: I want to make a MUD

There have been threads here that have addressed what players like, and dislike, in a MUD as well as building one from scratch.

I don't have the links for the threads I believe was called, What turns People On to RP, and likewise What turns people off from RP.

The threads contain the views of several here, and would make an excellant resource for you to use in your endevor.

Re: I want to make a MUD

Thank you for your replies.

I had actually intended this to be more of a good-hearted lament thread for those who have wanted a game but for whatever reason cannot contribute the time into making one -- sharing their ideas of what they would have done had they opened one and what their hopes might have been.
