why are the threads backwards?

hello.
i'm a new user of topmudsites, and after a bit of confusion i've found all the threads are backwards.
the first information is the last thing posted, the oldest post is on the last page.

this is contrary to every other site on the internet.

am i able to configure this option?

Re: why are the threads backwards?

Log in. On the top menu bar, right below the logo, you'll see 'User CP' (control panel). Click that. On the side list, click 'Edit options'. Third box down is 'thread display options'. In there, the option you want to find is 'Thread Display Mode'. With no account/anonymous browsing, this is set to oldest first, which is what you desire. New accounts are apparently set with the option newest first, and need to be manually changed. I agree with you though, that is a dumb default setting.

Re: why are the threads backwards?

I like it that way because some threads go on for pages. It's so convenient to just jump to the end of the conversation and check to see what I missed. I do check the site every day though which makes a big difference. New threads are usually short enough that a quick scroll will get me the whole thread.

There's not a lot of difference for me in using shift-end or shift-home or in using page up or page down. Of course, if I recognize the first (last) post, I don't need to scroll at all.

Re: why are the threads backwards?

I definitely prefer it this way. Having to find the end of a long thread is irritating. A perhaps interesting related fact would be that I prefer my code backwards as well - lowest level functions at the top of a file, highest level at the bottom. That way you don't have to put extra function headers at the top of the file for statics.

Re: why are the threads backwards?

Can you make the threads when you're looking at the forums be the other way around?

Re: why are the threads backwards?

That's an interesting idea. Static variables don't need to be at the top?

Re: why are the threads backwards?

Excuse the late reply on this - have been out of pocket with a crazy work project that went live last weekend.

All forums now default to newest first in thread view mode. I can't think of a good reason why this was set to be ascending order other than I might have mistaken it for the order of posts within a thread when originally converting the forum to vBulletin.

Re: why are the threads backwards?

If you write the main routine first and put it at the top of the file, all the static subroutines below it will need headers manually inserted at the top for it to compile clean. If you move the main routine to the bottom, all the static functions it needs have been defined by the time you get to it, no extra headers required. Also, reverse ordering somehow seems easier for me to read.

Interesting. I may try that later, when I'm not getting graded on the layout. :-)
