Blood of Dragons: The "A Song of Ice and Fire" MUSH

Adress: bod.westeros.org: 3000

Blood of Dragons is set in the low-magic, medieval-inspired fantasy world of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. Knowledge of the books is not required for players with some MU*ing experience, though it is definitely helpful.

The game takes place 140 years prior to the start of the first book, A Game of Thrones, and the roleplay is focused on the political and social interactions at the royal court in King's Landing and at the court in Sunspear in Dorne, with players taking up characters from various noble households. Players have a choice between CGing a character themselves or taking up previously played, fully pre-generated role.

King Baelor, the pious successor of warlike King Daeron, has personally lead the 49 hostages taken during the initial Conquest of Dorne back to Sunspear to make peace with Prince Marence. This heralds a new era for both King's Landing and Sunspear, and there is much uncertainty in both courts.

In King's Landing, many wonder what King Baelor's court will be like and what sort of men (and women) will find his favour. Trying to anticipate how to best approach gaining power under this particular ruler is no easy task. In Sunspear, meanwhile, Prince Marence has hardly emerged from the war as a ruler who has the confidence of his subjects. Around him, factions are forming, each hoping to wield influence over what they see as a too cautious, too indecisive prince.

We feel that we're offering good-quality roleplay in a rich, immersive setting with a strong sense of history and continuity and we strive to be approachable and helpful. If you find yourself interested in the game, the following links provide some good starting points:

Man, I really wish this wasn't a MUSH. It doesn't do GRRM any justice.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire MUSH

I think it depends on what aspects of the series you focus on. If its the bloody warfare and strategy you want to capture, then yes, a MUD might be better suited. If its the political intrigue, I think roleplay-focused is what's needed.

Of course, I am biased. And GRRM noted to us that he was quite intrigued by the game, and that he better not try it out in case he'd end up hooked and distracted from his writing.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire MUSH

Sorry to derail your thread. But yes I agree, I tried the Mush and it wasn't suited to my tastes. I loved the intrigue and setup but having no combat system, no skills, no realistic way to represent the character really bit hard on my love for GRRM's world. The emote system should be far more advanced as well. If you take a look at any RPI you could see that meshing intrigue political roleplay with combat is not hard, you just have to have good coders and a solid base. The Shadows of Isildur base, or Argila base would have been perfect for a ASOIAF game world.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire MUSH

Given that the setting is based on a work of fiction, rather than an RPG setting, I think it makes sense to have a game where story-telling is the primary focus rather than statistics. Most MUSHers are are interested in roleplay that consists of good writing, without the assistance of, for example, an emote system.

That said, there's no reason that a MUSH can't have stats, skills and coded ways of conflict. In fact, we do have stats and skills, and we have a coded jousting system and a coded rumor system for gaining and losing influence at court.

We are also working on a renown system that will run side-by-side with the influence, and after that we will be looking at coding melee combat if that is something we can manage to pull off. But the intention will always be for these systems to just be there as extra flavour for those who want to use them. The co-operative story-telling aspect is the focus of the game.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire MUSH

King Daeron has once more departed for Dorne with an army, intent on crushing the rebellion that began some months ago. Over the next few months there will be skirmishes and battles between the king's forces and the Dornish rebels who seek to regain their independence. Players are able to take up characters in King's Landing, in Sunspear or with either the royal host or the Dornish rebels, and during the campaign the option also exists to have one or two regular characters as well as temp-alting puppets in other locations.

For non-Dornish characters, there are plenty of CGed characters to choose from for those who prefer not to CG their own characters. However, as this is not the case for Dornish characters, the Admin are offering the following to help build up a pool of CGed characters based in the region: submit a concept for a Dornish character, and they will CG it for you.

We certainly hope so. We're hoping the campaign in Dorne will be something different from what we've done so far.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire MUSH

The first post on this thread has been updated to reflect the current IC situation on the game.

King Baelor will now be leading the 49 hostages back to Dorne within a few days, and following that OOC efforts will be stepped up to increase roleplay in Sunspear. Players are encouraged to take up a character in each area (King's Landing and Sunspear) and it is the goal of the Admin that both courts will offer plenty of opportunities for ambitious characters to make their mark.

We have recently changed the startup process for new characters somewhat to allow character creation from the login screen. This will create a Visitor account that can be used while the new player looks around for a permanent character. We hope this will make it easier for new players to setup connections to current PCs.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire MUSH

This weekend (August 20th to August 22nd) sees the return of the former hostages to Dorne. Most prominent among these are Prince Cadan Nymeros Martell, the brother of Prince Marence. He is a CGed but currently unplayed character and we'd love to see him in play for this event and onwards. To learn more about the character, simply log on to the game and type "+cdb/view cadan/all", "+cdb/eview cadan/all" and "+cdb/rview cadan/all".

Cadan is a Tier III Restricted character, so to apply for him you need to have read "A Song of Ice and Fire" and you need to have prior MU*ing experience. The application asks for logs of prior roleplay but this can be substituted for a probationary period.

We would also like to see more Dornish characters in general, and some other CGed characters that may be of interest include:

Jasmylla Fowler (a young lady, one of the former hostages)
Liane Uller (a young heiress, one of the former hostages)
Jossart Vaith (a young lord, one of the former hostages)
Azalais Dayne (a young lady and aspiring artist)

In addition, there are plenty of unCGed characters available in both Dorne and King's Landing for those who prefer to do their own character creation.
