Where were you at 410pm ET when the power went out for 60 million people in North America on August 14th, 2003?  The say it took only 9 seconds for the whole "Eastern Grid" to lose power and at this time, the exact cause is unknown.

I was in my living room awaiting an arrival from a local convenience store.  It was hot and I was thirsty!

We had been suffering from brownouts for a few days and right before the blackout.  At 409pm ET the cable box had shut down due to lack of power and then the whole house went dark a minute later.  Needless to say the store had no power, so I had nothing to drink except the tap water which was low.

The power came back on right before 11pm ET and we were ordered not to run any appliances or computers for at least 24 hours.

If you could, offer up a MUD log snippet, minus IP/private information, showing the cutoff at or around 410pm ET.  It would be interesting to see where MUDs stopped.

None of the MUDs I have access to had any logs close to the time, but one of the routers for IMC logged this before being shutdown by the power outage.

Hub Log (Eastern Timezone):
These are the last three logs.

Thu Aug 14 16:09:32 2003 :: imc_connect_to: connecting to FreeDale
Thu Aug 14 16:09:38 2003 :: imc_connect_to: connecting to AZ
Thu Aug 14 16:10:03 2003 :: imc_connect_to: connecting to ImmU-RoM

Hub1 Log (Pacific Timezone):
Hub1 waited twenty minutes before booting the Hub connection.

Thu Aug 14 13:30:03 2003 :: Close-notify packet for Hub received from *@Hub1.
Thu Aug 14 13:30:03 2003 :: Hub: closing link

I had to edit this to disable emotion icons, boy those are nutty!

I was looting.... J/k. I live in the state across from Michigan. God bless the Great Lakes. Physical barriers are wonderful for keeping our heads out of the clouds, and for separating enourmous power systems. No power loss for me.

Alright... I was laughing from my living room in Norway while watching the chaos on TV. Now I'm feeling guilty

Actually, most of our players are from the midwest and we didn't lose too many of them.

I was wading in the Chattahoochee river here in north Georgia and didn't even know there had been one till I stopped at my favorite book store hours later and the couple there who run it showed me the news on TV.

My MUD was down during it, but it was down the day before for other reasons anyways. Was back up soon.

Well, from someone from the other side of Lake Michigan, I didnt loose any power. In the Northern Lower Penisula, we're on a different grid (gotta love that extra nuke plant by Petotski )

I was at work, heard if from a customer and watched all the flatlanders panick thinking we were next. The locals and I chuckled because we knew the truth.

BTW..cant remember the station ID, but when there's a storm system in the Lake, at the store we get skip from a rock station out of Green Bay. Their selections are far better than the loser stations we have in the area.

Question

I was busy cackling from the inside my impenetrable grand fortress, hewn into the side of a mountain for maximum impenetrability, as my grand scheme for world domination took one step closer to its impending completion.

Muahaha. Muahahahaha. Muahahahahahaha. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I was on the mud as usual when it went dead, not that our home box in Boston died, but because all the repeaters died. I knew what was going on and once I knew it wasn't terrorism I pretty much relaxed and laughed at all the silly people walking around in the streets lost and dazed.

I was there in the NYC area for the first big blackout so I felt I was allowed to sit in my air conditioned room and snicker about how the almighty CON ED screwed up yet again. You realize they pay those executives 6 figure salaries to make sure that there's enough redundancy so that shouldn't happen?

I admit I was concerned it would last until past nightfall though, it's dangerous enough in a northeastern city with the lights on. Lights off is just insane.
